Crowns, bridges and facings

Crowns

If your tooth is cracked or broken, has undergone a root canal treatment or requires a filling that’s too large for the tooth, a crown may be needed.

A crown is a cap made of metal and/or porcelain which fits exactly over a ground tooth or molar. After, the dentist glues the cap to the molar, which will return the tooth or molar to its original shape and/or function.

Crowns are made from different materials. The most suitable material for you depends on several factors and is always discussed with the dentist.

Bridges

A bridge can replace a missing tooth or molar by “bridging” the empty space. A bridge consists of several attached crowns with a floating crown at the base of the missing tooth.

Bridges are made of different materials. The most suitable material for you depends on several factors and is always discussed with the dentist.

Facings

A facing is a shield of porcelain or composite that the dentist places over the tooth. The purpose of this is to beautify the shape or color of the tooth. A facing can fill in cracks, whiten discolored teeth or restore shape. A facing made of porcelain does not discolour over time, unlike a facing made of composite.
