Root canal treatment (endodontics)

A root canal treatment can also be called an endodontic treatment. The cause is often a toothache, which is caused by an inflamed nerve as a result of deep tooth decay. Dying nerves then lead to a severe toothache and require the necessary treatment.

During a root canal treatment, the dentist drills a hole in the tooth. Afterwards, the dentist removes the inflamed tissue with a small file in order to disinfect the root canal (including the side canals), to ensure that all the bacteria disappear.

Is a root canal treatment painful?

Performing a root canal treatment can be performed painlessly with modern techniques. In most cases, the tooth can be anesthetized and the treatment is therefore bearable. Depending on your personal situation, the dentist can opt to perform the treatment in one appointment or several appointments. Post-treatment you can expect mild pain for a number of days, for which you will receive pain relief.
